This renovation of a 75 sq.m. apartment in Athens was based on the reorganization of the floor plan, relocating the kitchen and creating an open-plan living area. The emphasis on the existing beams through decorative cladding, the use of Taj Mahal marble, oak wood, and handmade tiles, along with layered lighting design, compose a bright and contemporary living environment.

The renovation of this 75 sq.m. apartment in Athens was driven by the need to redefine everyday living through a new, more open and functional spatial organization. The original layout was characterized by intense compartmentalization, with the kitchen occupying an isolated position at the rear of the apartment and functioning as a purely secondary space. A key objective of the design proposal was to optimize every square meter and consolidate the shared functions into a bright and spacious core at the front side of the apartment. The kitchen is now brought to the forefront and transformed into the heart of the home, organizing around it the living area and a generous lounge space that encourages social interaction and everyday connectivity.

At the same time, the proposal preserves the apartment’s essential private functions, ensuring two bedrooms and a clear distinction between communal and more private zones. One of the bedrooms is relocated to the former kitchen area, making efficient use of the existing floor plan. The bathroom remains in its original position and is redesigned through a more efficient rearrangement of the sanitary fixtures. The entrance area and corridor act as transitional privacy filters, while also incorporating a full-height storage wall that fully addresses the owners’ storage needs without visually burdening the space. The spatial reconfiguration is also closely connected to the building’s structural framework. The removal of selected partition walls revealed existing beams, which were subsequently integrated into the architectural composition. These beams are clad with decorative panels that frame and define the zones of the different subspaces, introducing a sense of contemporary elegance and understated luxury.

The material palette and color scheme were carefully designed to create a bright, calm, and timeless living environment. Soft beige tones enhance the apartment’s natural light while drawing references from the chromatic richness of Taj Mahal marble, which has shades of beige, off-white, pale pink, and delicate golden veining. Oak veneer combined with marble is strategically used on the kitchen counter, the kitchen island and fireplace composition, highlighting the main focal points of the living spaces. The existing wooden flooring was replaced as a defining feature within the bedrooms, while the new materials and subtle tonal transitions establish a sense of continuity between the old and the new.

Emphasis was also placed on the detailing of surfaces through the use of small-scale tiles in selected areas of the kitchen and bathroom. Their application creates a visual continuity with the linearity of the decorative panels cladding the beams, reinforcing the coherence of the overall architectural composition. Their handcrafted character and glossy finish lend the surfaces an almost jewel-like quality, while their interaction with both natural and artificial light subtly changes throughout the day, generating reflections and a sense of vibrancy within the space. At the same time, carefully selected accents of warm and cool tones in decorative elements create subtle contrasts and layered textures throughout the apartment. Lighting is designed as an integral part of the architectural experience, with multiple lighting scenarios adapting to the needs and rhythms of everyday life, enhancing both the functionality and the atmosphere of the space.
