VO flat is a renovation of an apartment in downtown Athens, aiming to preserve its authentic Athenian character through minimal, thoughtful interventions and a design language grounded in simplicity, yet rich in texture and atmosphere. The primary objective was to create a bright, dual-aspect residence that meets contemporary standards while maintaining the identity of the apartment.

Key design parameters include the preservation of the original flooring and the highlighting of the curved wall in both the bathroom and the entrance space. The most significant spatial intervention was the unification of the living areas, with the kitchen island serving as the central organizing element of the apartment. The formerly large and dark entrance space is transformed into a luminous dining area, offering a welcoming transition into the home.

The design approach is based on a philosophy of warm minimalism, where clear forms are combined with rich materiality. Natural materials such as wood, marble, glass, and ceramic are proposed, complemented by stainless steel details and accents of soft blue, forming a balanced color palette. An additional design gesture involves exposing the structural frame (columns and beams) in their original raw concrete state.

The bathroom and bedroom remain in their original locations. In the bathroom, a more efficient layout enhances functionality while emphasizing the architectural quality of the curved wall through the use of distinctive materials. The marble kitchen sink is repurposed as a washbasin, set on a custom piece of furniture in a soft blue tone. Walls and the built-in bathtub are clad in handmade ochre tiles, introducing a subtle retro atmosphere.

More robust, industrial materials, such as cement, glass blocks, and stainless steel, frame and accentuate the apartment’s original parquet and mosaic floors. Soft, diffused lighting, filtered through curtains and paper fixtures, creates a calm and ambient atmosphere. At the same time, the use of glass blocks enhances the diffusion of light while maintaining privacy. The result is a “living” space that interacts with its occupants in different ways throughout the day.
